We've started the paid-for part of our excursion, on the mighty Zambezi river near Victoria Falls. We're staying at Tongabezi, a very classy lodge on the Upper part of the river. Our first two nights were on a secluded island retreat, Sindabezi, where Lucy and I were the only guests. Our room was suspended over the river, open to the elements and the magnificence of the dawn chorus. It's a truly special place, with intimate, relaxed service, great food and killer G&T's. On the Zimbabwe side of the river is a favourite spot for water-buck, warthog and baboon to enjoy a drink. The river is teeming with grumpy-sounding hippos, and the island is covered in elephant dung. Apparently there's only one rhino in Zambia and we saw him this morning on a little game drive.
Tomorrow morning we're going for a canoe up the river (Lucy is driving!) and then some kind of fancy lunch and a terrifying-sounding swim on Livingstone Island, overlooking the falls themselves. Backpacking this most certainly is not!
This place is absolutely magical and I'm not going to spoil it by spending longer than necessary here on the goggle-box.
